STM32 Virtual Com Port Driver

FlexSEA-Manage and FlexSEA-Rigid use an STM32 microcontroller. While it supports USB, it requires a special driver on Windows. Without this driver, a COM port will be detected but you will not be able to read/write data.

Note 1: The STM website now claims that “Starting from Windows® 10, the STSW-STM32102 driver is no more adequate and the usage of the native inbox driver is recommended.” but this is not what we found in practice.

Note 2: The tutorial mentions v1.4.0 of the driver, but v1.5.0 works as well.

Step by step:

  1. Install the Virtual Com Port driver to be able to connect to the STM32 chip on the FlexSEA. Do this by running the application: VCP_V1.4.0_Setup.exe
  2. Now go to the installation directory, which is most likely: C:\Program Files(x86)\STMicroelectronics\Software\Virtual comport driver\Win8
  3. … and run the application corresponding to your operating system: dpinst_amd64.exe for 64 bit windows. dpinst_x86.exe for 32 bit windows
  4. Unplug and re-plug your device. Make sure that Windows detects a valid COM port, the device should appear as “STMicroelectronics Virtual COM Port (COMx)” in the Device manager. If you see a yellow exclamation mark it means that your driver is not properly installed.
